Name: Lorenz Hellman Gloucester
Canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Canon Point: Verdant Wind Ch. 13
Age: 24
History: Link to the FE Wiki
Personality: First impressions of Lorenz early in the game lead the player and his peers to see him as a very prideful, snobbish sort of young man who takes his status as a noble very seriously-- a judgement which is true, but also highly superficial. While his mannerisms can come across as vain and standoffish at first, those who get to know Lorenz find that he is a staunch and reliable friend who will offer aid without prompt or question, and that the aid he offers is as exemplary as his boasts suggest. Born to the noble Gloucester family in the Alliance, Lorenz feels that he must hold himself to an incredibly high standard and does so without complaint, even stating that he does so just in case he is ever called upon to lead the Liecester Alliance in the future, in part due to the distrust that lingers between the various ruling houses within the country and in light of the scandal which nearly tore the ruling Riegan family apart not long before the story begins. Although Claude's sudden and unexplained appearance as the heir to the Riegan name resolves the scandal, the hints of mistrust linger... and Lorenz had his suspicion's about Claude's ability to even lead in the early days. While he admits that he doesn't particularly wish to be the leader of the entire country, he also states that he will do so unwaveringly if it is called upon him, and all of his brash, bold, condescending, and even classist attitudes in his youth were in preparation for such an event.
Because, ultimately, Lorenz takes the responsibility he sees himself-- and every Noble-- carrying incredibly seriously. All of his training, posturing, and even flirting with the young noble ladies as a teenager were to lay the groundwork for the inevitability that he would one day be the one leading both his family and the people residing within Gloucester territory and, while he later admits after five years of war pass to finding these behaviors embarrassing, he has no shame or regrets about them. They were necessary. When confronted with the notion that he never once flirted with commoner women, and how he even tried his best to avoid eyecontact with them for quite a while, Lorenz stated that his particular tastes were due to the notion that, as a Noble, he needed to marry a woman of a similar status-- and, indeed, even admitted that he would leave any woman of low birth whom he fell in love with for the sake of duty and his family name.
Although his overly emphasized grace, suaveness, and unabashed statements of his status and prowess in any activity he attempted painted him as being just as stuffy and closed minded as his noble peers, Lorenz is noted for considering the overall well-being of his vassals and the lands that they nuture. He has a certain disdain for the more selfish and self-serving nobles who do anything to better their status and their name, and wishes that the bickering and distrust among the ruling houses would cease so cooperation could be achieved. His own father isn't immune to this sentiment, and Lorenz has shown himself to be quite critical of his father's methods at various points in the game. Doubtless, his exposure to a variety of people with a variety of social circumstances within the classrooms of the Officer's Academy has broadened his view, and interactions with them-- particularly Raphael and Ignatz-- show that he is willing to bend convention to mold himself to work with the people immediately around him.
Due to his noble status, Lorenz sees himself as having a distinct responsibility to the common people, and that the social influence he is granted should be ultimately used for the greater good. Additionally, he believes that common people have the right to revolt just to ensure a system of checks and balances within the nobility. If the noble family in charge of the land does well to nuture and strengthen the efforts of the people, then of course there would be no need to revolt. But, this is not the case as he has observed, and indeed he would even be willing to support a revolt if the matter were to arise before him.
Regarding his relationship with his classmates, especially Claude, it should be noted that Lorenz softens his strict attitudes and grows to trust them as individuals over time. While he firmly believes that it is his responsibility to, for example, protect Raphael-- as Raphael is an orphan born of the merchant class who has a younger sister to take care of-- he also willingly accepts that it is ultimately Raphael who will be protecting Lorenz himself on the battlefield. Although he pursued Marianne initially for her beauty and the potential that needed to be nurtured within her, he realized that nothing about her needed changed-- and that she was beautiful just as she was. When she offered even to reveal to him the secret of her Crest, that weighed upon her heart and influenced every one of her interpersonal interactions, Lorenz stopped her; if revealing a secret like that would cause her distress, he would much prefer not knowing than to see her suffer.
And, it is with Claude that he shows the most growth. While their relationship bordered upon a one-sided rivalry during their days at the Academy, largely due to Lorenz's mistrust of Claude due to his sudden appearance and unknown circumstances, Lorenz goes from taunting and even spying on his classmate in order to learn his secrets to outright stating to Claude's face that he has observed the 'capacity to govern' within the other man.
Their relationship shifted from the distrust that was evident between all of the noble houses within the Alliance to a deep and unshakeable trust-- one that would stand firmly no matter what obstacles were thrown into their path.
Abilities & Skills: Lorenz is a young man of noble birth who has been granted an education fitting of his status and the responsibilities that he will take on when it is his turn to lead his family's house and holdings in the Liecester Alliance. As such, he has attended schooling extensively in both the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach as well as the Royal Academy of Sorcery in the capital city of the Kingdom of Faerghus before the rebellion that tore the Kingdom in two erupted. As such, he has extensive analytical and observational skills that make him both adept at politics and at reading people-- despite how his grandious demeanor tends to complicate matters. His martial strengths include Lance Fighting, Horsemanship, and magic based on Reason-- this canon's version of 'Dark' or 'Offensive' magic. As a descendant of the hero from Fodlan's ancient past, Gloucester, Lorenz also bears the Crest of his ancestor in his bloodline as well. Practically this does little for him on a day-to-day basis, but in combat it does allow for the possibility of boosting his innate magical skills. His strengths and solid statistics make him have decent potential for any of the known soldier or magic classes that are available within the game, provided that he takes a certification exam to hold those titles.
Beyond the martial and academic, Lorenz is also the sort who does his best to support those around him however he can. Although he has difficulty at first due to how the differences between the Noble and Commoner classes are, he has the flexibility of mind to adjust quickly and an innate ability to empathize with his companions and the people around him. When he has made a decision he is unwavering, and has been known to even engage in minor levels of espionage in order to prove a point either to himself or to others. Beyond this, he has shown that he knows at least the basics of first aid for minor injuries, such as sprains, twists, and potentially even dislocations. He has used these skills unbidden as well, because of altruistic nature and his belief that his social status puts him in a position where it's negligent to withhold whatever aid he is capable of delivering. As a Noble, he feels that it's additionally his duty to work for the betterment of the people in his community and holds a very firm belief that the nobility should not use their wealth and power for selfish means. Once he is in a position to act, he is unafraid to do so and-- in the case of the current ruling class of the Alliance-- may even be willing to act on his own to 'dispose of' the individuals who are causing the problems. His stance is no secret, but he is both willing and able to work with and around whatever schemes the people around him might be harboring.
Inventory/Companions:
- The Hero's Relic, Thyrsus
- Steel Lance
- Bergamot Tea
- Silk Handkercheif
- a Vulnerary
- a notebook with hand written poems
Choice: Monster-- of the Faun variety
Reason: In part because of the themes of the game-- during the Academy chapters of the game, Lorenz's class was called the Golden Deer, and Fauns have many traits that are associated with Deer. Lorenz is additionally a very community oriented person who uses his skills to benefit those around him. Both the nature related magic and the unerring sense of direction would be great assets in this regard.
