name: Lorenz Hellman Gloucester
canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
age: 24
canon point: Verdant Wind, Chapter 13
history: Link to the FE Wiki
abilities:
Lorenz the heir to House Gloucester, and like all noble heirs he has been given an education befit his rank at the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach. This, along with his semester at the Royal Academy of Sorcery in the capital city of the Kingdom of Faerghus before being recalled to the Alliance when violence tore the Capital apart, has helped him hone his extensive analytical and observational skills that make him both adept at politics and at reading people-- despite how people may guess the opposite. His martial strengths include Lance Fighting, Horsemanship, and magic based on Reason-- this canon's version of 'Dark' or 'Offensive' magic. As a descendant of the hero from Fodlan's ancient past, Gloucester, Lorenz also bears the Crest of his ancestor in his bloodline as well. Practically this does little for him on a day-to-day basis, it can boost his magical skills in combat.
Beyond the martial and academic, Lorenz is also the sort who does his best to support those around him however he can. Although quite bound to his role and rank within society, he has the flexibility of mind to adjust quickly and an innate ability to empathize with his companions and the people around him. When he has made a decision he is an unwavering, solid pillar among his peers. Beyond this,he knows at least the basics of first aid for minor injuries. This, combined with his altruism, has had him stepping in unbidden to offer aid as he is able to. As a Noble, he feels that it's additionally his duty to work for the betterment of the people in his community and holds a very firm belief that the nobility should not use their wealth and power for selfish means. His stance is no secret, and he is both willing and able to work with and around whatever schemes the people around him might be harboring in order to help make society a better place.
personality:
Lorenz comes across as a very self-possessed young man who is deeply enmeshed with the Nobility of Fodlan and everything that this means within context of society. He can be vain and standoff-ish, but it quickly becomes clear that he holds himself to an impossibly high standard. His sense of noblesse oblige even is a part of this, as he feels that it is part of his role to take care of those around him and stand as a leader within the Alliance if it is called on him to do so. It isn't a hunger for power that drives him, but a sense of duty. His posturing and flirtations early on, which he later admitted to be embarrassing, were part of how he was trying to live up to the role that he had been given when he was very young, to the point that he didn't even necessarily consider his own wants and needs into the equation until later on.
Although his focus on holding onto his role as a Noble paints Lorenz as shallow and pretentious, Lorenz is noted for considering the overall well being of both his peers and the vassals on his fathers lands. He disdains self serving nobles like his father and wishes that the infighting within the Alliance would cease so cooperation can be achieved. Doubtless, his exposure to various people and circumstances within the classrooms of the Officer's Academy has broadened his view, and interactions with them-- particularly Raphael, Ignatz, and Leonie-- show that he is willing to bend convention to mold himself to work with the people immediately around him.
Lorenz's sense of duty to the people and his interactions at Garreg Mach with people of a different class has influenced his politics; he believes that common people have the right to revolt in unjust circumstances. If the noble family in charge of the land does well to nurture and strengthen the efforts of the people, then of course there would be no need to revolt. But, this is not the case as he has observed, and indeed he would even be willing to support a revolt if the matter were to arise before him.
Indeed, his relationship with his peers, especially Claude, is noted to have softened his hard edges as he has grown to trust them with time. While he firmly believes that it is his responsibility to, for example, protect Raphael, a merchant-born orphan who has a younger sister to take care of-- he also willingly accepts that it is ultimately Raphael who will be protecting Lorenz himself on the battlefield. Although he pursued Marianne initially to help her inner beauty show, he realized in time that she was beautiful just as she was. When she offered even to reveal to him the terrible secret of her Crest, Lorenz stopped her; if revealing a secret like that would cause her distress, he would much prefer not knowing than to see her suffer.
And, it is with Claude that he blossomed. While their relationship bordered on a one-sided rivalry in their youth, largely due to Lorenz's mistrust of Claude due to his sudden appearance and unknown circumstances, Lorenz goes from taunting and even spying on his classmate to learn his secrets to outright stating to Claude's face that he has observed the 'capacity to govern' within the other man.
Their relationship shifted from the distrust that was evident between all of the noble houses within the Alliance to a deep and unshakeable trust-- one that would stand firmly no matter what obstacles were thrown into their path.
